Technique 4:        What are the four steps used in turning / cornering?

Slow     • Look     • Press   & • Roll.

Slow — reduce your speed. Slow to a proper entry speed, one that will allow you to control the curve instead of the curve controlling you.  [We will examine this concept and discuss it thoroughly during class… for now, just remember to SLOW before starting to turn.]  Entering a corner at the proper speed may be the difference between coming out of the curve or not exiting at all!

Look — turn your head, use your eyes, look through the curve.  ”Look where you want to go”… you’re going to hear that a lot this weekend, it is that important.  The sooner you turn your head and really look where you want the motorcycle to go, the sooner you’ll make smooth, easy turns.

Press — press right to go right, press left to go left. Sounds confusing doesn’t it? If you rode a bicycle you’ve already done this.  It will be discussed in class.

Roll — roll on a little throttle. A small amount of acceleration stabilizes the suspension in mid-range so there is more “give” available in your motorcycle’s suspension. A little extra suspension travel is nice to have should the road have less that a perfectly smooth surface (like our local country roads with the logging trucks using them!).  It also makes up for the speed reduction used in the first step when you slowed to enter the curve.  Once you can see the exit of the curve and ensure there are no hazards to contend with, a smooth acceleration feels good coming out of a curve.

There you have it, the 4 steps we’ll use this weekend to control, and safely negotiate, a curve.
